Findings - Suggestions

Make the interaction cycle longer

One suggested improvement is to make the interaction cycle longer by asking the participants to do more tasks so that more participants will experiment. For example, after all items have been placed on the pads, the machine could ask the participants to remove it one by one and then ask them to pass the items one by one again. This gives more chance for the participants to find out that the machine is unintelligent because they may try to put the items on the wrong pads.

Reposition the streaming video on the screen

All the participants did not really notice the streaming video on the upper left corner of the TV screen because they are concentrating on the instruction text in the middle of the screen. It is suggested that in Director Xtra should be used so that the streaming video image could be place in the middle of the screen with the instruction text placed underneath the streaming video.

Further Research

It is suggested that if the research were to be run again in the future, a control installation could be set up to see the affect of certain aspects of the installation. For example, ‘Alice’s Tea Party’ made the participants think of grandmothers. So to study how this can affect people’s behaviour, another installation could be set up with less floral and elaborate design - by using a plain tea set and tablecloth.
