I am a post-doctoral researcher in the Biomedical Engineering group of the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland, Australia. Previously I worked as a post-doctoral fellow and studied for a PhD in MR physics at the Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre in Nottingham, UK where I was supervised by Prof Richard Bowtell.

The focus of my research is the development of new hardware and techniques for MRI. Much of my research is related to the design, construction and testing of innovative gradient and shim coils for MRI. In 2007 I designed and built a head only gradient and shim set for dynamic shimming using an inverse boundary element method with Magnex Scientific Ltd., Oxford (now part of Agilent Technologies Inc.). Also, with this technique, I designed a unique split gradient set for a hybrid PET-MRI system now in operation at the University of Cambridge, UK. Recently, I have developed a new technique that allows the wire spacing in gradient coils to be controlled explicitly, causing an increase in coil strength (more than double in some cases), which is being used in a project with the University of Kyoto to build a 3T high-temperature superconducting magnet MRI system.

Current research projects include:

  • Head-only gradient coils for HTS MRI system,
  • Eddy current modelling and control for gradient coils in MRI,
  • Improved shimming for 7T human MRI system,
  • Improved shimming for 16.4T small animal imaging,
  • Development of a novel MR-compatible robotic actuator system,
  • Gradient coil design for reduced temperature and increased strength.
