The aim of this milestone is to ensure that the candidate's project is developing appropriately and identify outstanding issues that may impact on progress.

It is assumed that at this stage, most of the research work has been undertaken.

At confirmation, the candidate demonstrated that they had a viable research proposal which they were capable of undertaking, and that they had the resources and support to conduct the research. At mid-candidature, the emphasis is now on demonstrating that the research project has been (for the most part) realised and is on track for successful completion by the due date. Furthermore, the candidate should establish a feasible plan of action for completion within the set timeframes.

  • PhD: 9–12 months after confirmation for full-time candidates, 18–24 months for part-time candidates.
  • MPhil: 4–6 months after confirmation for full-time candidates, 8–12 months for part-time candidates.
